Understanding FTP - File Transfer Protocol

Your html web pages and your graphics files will need to be uploaded from your computer to the Development Server which is where you will be previewing your web sites before they go live on the Internet. Eventually you will be uploading your web site files to the public web server which will be able to be seen from computers all over the world.

The class server that you will be uploading your files to is called Techcity 13. The web URL for that server is http://techcity13.boston.k12.ma.us . To upload your files to that site you will need to open an application called Cute FTP

The process for making changes to your web site and uploading filse is below.

1. Make changes to your web pages and/or your graphics. (if your are changing your graphics, first make the change using the Photoshop type file, .psd, then save it as a .jpg file and place the new .jpg file on your web page.
2. Upload your web html type files to your directory, i.e.
3. Upload your .jpg and .gif files that you have in your images directory.
4. Test your web site after you have uploaded your files to make sure all the images are showing and other things such as links to other pages are working. You can test your web site on the development server called Techcity 13 by going to http://techcity13.k12.ma.us/rlamothe and change the rlamothe to your directory name.
