Understanding How Tables Work and Their Value to Web Designers and Developers

Tables are one of the most important design methods for laying out web pages. Web Developers and Designers use tables to position web page content on different parts of the web page.

We will be creating a new page that will be use tables to display various graphics that you create.

  1. Open up Dreamweaver and create a new file if one isn't automatically created.
  2. Save it in your named directory on your H drive and give it a name something like robert_graphics.htm.

  3. At the top of the page, put in a title, something like, Robert's Graphic Creations.

  4. Make the title larger: Highlighting the title, Right Click on it, click on Paragraph format, and make it a Heading 3 or 2.

  5. Put the cursor below your heading and click on the table icon on your tool bar. For more information on tables, go to Mr. L's Tips on Working with Tables.

  6. In the window that pops up, choose the number of row and columns that you want. I would also suggest putting in 5 for the cell padding. This will give you a little margin within each cell. The per cent determines the width of the page in relation to how large the browser window is. If you choose pixels for the width box, the size of the table will stay the same no matter what size the browser window is and what size the computer monitor is such as 15 inches or 17 inches.
