Creating a Budget - Young Achievers Homeless Project

Introduction

You are a worker at a factory that makes CD Rom Players. You work 8 hours a day-40 hours a week. Currently you are making minimum wage which is $_________ an hour. You have two children and a husband who takes care of the children. He was laid off from his running shoe factory job which was moved to a factory in Indonesia.

Currently you are staying in a shelter for families. Conditions are difficult and your whole family would like to have their own place to live. You need to figure out how to get your own apartment for the family.

Someone in your group will need to research what the current minumun wage is. How would you go about finding that out?

Your Task

Your task is to figure out a budget to be able to get your own apartment. You will be working in groups of two so you will need to find a partner to work on this project. Calculate your costs based on a monthly basis. You could start by looking in the housing adds in the local newspapers.

HOMEWORK
Ask your parents or guardians and anyone who might have information for help in figuring out what all your monthly costs will be. You may find that working one job may not be enough income to be able to afford an apartment. What could you do in that case? Find out what is costs for food and other necessary items and make estimates for what the monthly costs will be and include that in your budget.

I suggest that you have a column for income and a column for expenses.

Your Product That You Will Need for This Assignment

You will need to do your budget using MS Word. You will also need to be able to present your budget to the class and to the Community Meetings so you will need to create a MS Power Point Show that uses the information in your MS Word document. Also, choose some of the information from your budget, print it out, and paste it into your journal/homeless scrap book.

You will need a Bibliography that tells where you got your information and a description of the process that you went through to create your budget, i.e. who you talked with, your thinking in creating your budget.
