Activity 1 - Instructions for Creating Directories

  1. Open the Windows Explorer application by going to your desktop and double clicking on the shortcut icon
    on your desktop screen
or by going to Start ->Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer.
This application is used for many important computer functions such as creating directories (also called folders), copying files, moving files, etc.
  2. Hit the Plus Sign on the hard drive where you want to create your directory. Your network drive is called your H drive. It could also be your C drive, or D drive if you wanted to create directories on your local computer instead of the network computer. REMEMBER, your H drive is available from any computer on the Boston Public Schools network and therefore is convenient if you are going to be working on different computers and want to be able to get to your files.

  3. HIGHLIGHT your H drive to create a directory UNDER your H drive. In other words, HIGHLIGHT the directory where you want to create a sub directory under.PLEASE NOTE, TO CREATE A DIRECTORY UNDER ANOTHER DIRECTORY, YOU MUST HIGHLIGHT THAT DIRECTORY.
The first directory you need to create under you H drive is your named directory using your first letter of your first name, then your whole last name. i.e. rlamothe for Robert Lamothe.

  4. After you have highlighted your H drive as shown above, then you would go to the top of the window and click on File, New, Folder, then type the name for the directory. The rule for naming your directory is: all lower case letters, first letter of your first name, and then your last name. Thus, if your name were Robert Lamothe, your directory would be called rlamothe.

  5. Next you need to creat a directory for your grade that you are currently in. For example, if you are in the third grade, you will need to create a directory called grade3.
    HIGHLIGHT YOUR NAMED DIRECTORY FIRST.

  6. After you have highlighted your named directory as shown above, then you would go to the top of the window and click on File, New, Folder, then type the name for your grade, for example grade3 or whatever grade you are in. The rule for naming your directory is: all lower case letters and no spaces.

  7. Under your grade directory, you will need to create an images directory called images.

MAKE SURE YOU HIGHLIGHT YOUR GRADE 3 DIRECTORY first to create an images directory UNDER your grade 3 directory. Follow the instructions in step 5 to create your images directory.
